Real Madrid overturned a 3-1 deficit to beat Roma 4-3 in the Champions League, scoring three goals stemming from corners in the final six minutes. The Guardian’s match report described a late turnaround that left Roma stunned and gave José Mourinho a memorable, if chaotic, return to his former club.

Marten de Roon put Roma ahead before Kylian Mbappé levelled on his 100th Champions League appearance. Donyell Malen then scored twice in a six-minute spell early in the second half, putting the home side 3-1 ahead and leaving the 15-time European champions facing defeat.

Madrid’s response came in the closing minutes, with each of their three goals originating from a corner. Carlos Espí scored first, followed by Endrick, before former Roma defender Antonio Rüdiger struck the winner on his return to the Stadio Olimpico.

The sequence changed the result without erasing the scale of Roma’s earlier advantage: Mourinho’s side had led by two goals before conceding three times late on. Vinícius Júnior also featured in the win , although the match report does not identify him as a decisive factor in the comeback.

The result came on Mourinho’s first return to Roma, where he spent two-and-a-half years in charge. He led the Italian club to the Conference League title and an Europa League final, achievements remembered by supporters who displayed banners and sang in his honour.

It was also Roma’s first home Champions League match in more than seven years. The home crowd’s welcome and the late collapse made for an unusual evening for Mourinho, whose side had been in control of the scoreline before Madrid’s corner-driven finish.

Vinícius’s four-match ban for pulling an opponent’s hair during the previous league win over Villarreal was announced shortly before kick-off in Rome. Mourinho criticised the timing of the announcement, which came as his team prepared for the match.
