The Zinedine Zidane era of the French national team is up and running with Les Bleus opening their Uefa Nations League campaign with back-to-back victories over Turkey and Belgium.

If French fans expected Zidane’s team to look drastically different to the one that played under Didier Deschamps, though, they may have been disappointed by the stodgy performances produced in the first two matches which were both won by a narrow 1-0 scoreline.

Italy are also embarking on a new under Roberto Mancini who was surely delighted by the 4-1 win over Turkey in the Azzurri’s last outing. This heavyweight clash will be intriguing for a number of reasons.

Zidane’s first home match as France manager will be an occasion to remember. The 54-year-old is a former World Cup winner as a player and is expected to lead Les Bleus to the same level of success as a coach.

There is also pressure on Mancini to ensure Italy finally start building towards the future after the failure to qualify for three World Cups in a row. The 4-1 win over Turkey suggests Mancini has found a way to energise his players with Francesco Pio Esposito particularly impressive in Bursa.

France and Italy’s rivalry is one of the fiercest in international soccer. The atmosphere at the Stade de France will be electric, not just because Zidane is set to make his home bow as Les Bleus boss. The outcome will have a big bearing on who wins Group 1 at the A level of the Nations League.
