The Cityzens twice trailed The Gunners before getting a firm grip on the match late in the second half at the Etihad Stadium. Lauren Hemp netted a brace while Kerstin Casparij and Khadija Shaw were also on target as Manchester City remained top of the Barclays Women’s Super League table heading into the international break.
Speaking to the media after the game, Jeglertz admitted that he was pleased with Manchester City’s performance, but believes that there is work to do.
“We still have a lot of things to grow on, but we’ve shown today that we can win in different ways,” Jeglertz said. “Sometimes, you have the ball 70% and sometimes, the opponent is very good on the ball. We need to defend a little bit lower and find transition moments, so we definitely have parts to grow in, but the confidence in the group is correct. We know that we will always find our opportunities.”
Hemp grabbed the headlines with a brace and Jeglertz had plenty to say about the England international.
He said “Just watching her play is amazing and not just what she’s doing with the ball, but see how hard she’s working for her team, how she’s contributing in a lot of things. She has definitely grown. She has always been very good one-on-one, but now she can definitely contribute in so many different ways.”
Jeglertz also commented on the impact that the substitutes can have each game if given the time to express themselves.
He said “Every time when a player is not selected in the starting XI, it’s affecting depth. It will always be a little bit of confidence, feeling that ‘oh, I want to start’, which they all deserve to do. It’s my job to make sure that they understand that we still need them. I think it’s more about my feeling that after 60 minutes in general, if you want to have a real impact, normally you need 25 or 30 minutes to do it, so it’s been my intention that the ones coming in get that time.”
Manchester City return to action after the international break when they face Brighton & Hove Albion at The Joie Stadium.
