Watching football like an analyst does not require a statistics degree, but it does require looking past the scoreline and the possession percentage. The best analysts read a live match through a handful of measures that reveal which team is actually creating danger, which team is merely holding the ball, and when momentum is genuinely shifting. The most important of those measures is expected goals, known as xG, and understanding it changes how every match feels.

Expected goals measures the quality of chances, not just the number. Each shot is assigned a value between zero and one based on how likely a typical shot from that position, with that angle, distance and defensive pressure, is to become a goal. A penalty is worth around 0.76, a close-range tap-in might be 0.60, and a hopeful shot from 30 yards might be 0.03. Add up a team's shots and you get its xG total: a team with 2.5 xG has created chances worth roughly two and a half goals, regardless of whether it has actually scored. Spain's 2026 World Cup run is the perfect example: they allowed their opponents just 2.3 expected goals across eight matches, an average of 0.3 per game, the best defensive figure ever recorded at a men's World Cup. That number explains their title better than any highlight reel.

Shots on target and shots in the box matter more than raw shot counts. A team can take 20 shots and create almost nothing if most are from distance or blocked, while a team with five shots, all from inside the penalty area, has probably been the more dangerous side. The 2026 final illustrated this brutally: Spain finished with 20 shots to Argentina's two, with 12 on target, while Argentina did not attempt a single shot until the 26th minute of extra time. The scoreline was only 1-0, but the shot data told the real story long before Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute. Analysts were not surprised by the winner; they had been expecting it for an hour.

Momentum is the hardest thing to measure and the easiest to misread. A team can dominate possession without creating danger, and a team can look under pressure while actually defending comfortably. The signals analysts trust are territorial: passes completed in the final third, touches in the opposition box, and corner counts. In the final, Spain completed 235 passes in the final third to Argentina's 47, a field tilt of 83.3 percent, which showed territorial control far more honestly than the possession percentage alone. Corners are a useful proxy too: a team piling up corners without scoring is usually still the better side, even if the scoreboard says otherwise.

For live commentary and live betting, these measures are practical tools, not academic curiosities. When a favourite's xG is climbing but the score is still 0-0, the market's odds will often shorten on that team, because the model reads pressure as a leading indicator of a goal. When a team's xG is flat but its possession is high, the odds may not move at all, because the model knows possession without penetration is not danger. Learning to watch xG, shots in the box and final-third passes, rather than just the score and the clock, gives a viewer a genuine edge in understanding what is likely to happen next, even if it never guarantees it.

The best way to start is simple. During your next match, ignore the possession stat for ten minutes and count instead: how many shots each team takes from inside the box, how many corners each team wins, and which team is completing passes near the opposition goal. You will quickly see that some dominant-looking teams create almost nothing, while some under-pressure teams are one counter-attack from a goal. That is the analyst's view, and it is available to any fan willing to look past the obvious numbers. The scoreline tells you what has happened. Expected goals, shots and momentum tell you what is happening, and what might happen next.
